Marriage | He married Martha Loughead. A record for the marriage of Thomas Tilt and Martha Loughead has not been found. It should exist, probably in the county marriage records from the mid 1860s. Certainly, Martha had a connection with the Tilt family, for she appears in the 1861 census in Waterloo Township with the household of Thomas' parents, William and Caroline. Thomas is not present, though he was with them at the time of the 1851 census. Where Martha was in earlier years has not been found. A newspaper notice may yet be found and is, in any event, the best bet. |
Death | He died on 12 November 1919 at Toronto, York Co.. |
Burial | He was buried at Sec. F, Maitland Cemetery, Goderich, Huron Co.. |
Note | Initially, the list of children for Thomas and Martha is taken from information provided by the 1871 census at the town of Berlin , 1881 census at the town of Waterloo, and the 1891 census at the town of Goderich. Thomas' death registration tells that he was born in Blair, Waterloo County. As of 1840, the approximate year that Thomas was born, this was actually Blair in Waterloo Township of the Wellington District. When the District system was abolished, Waterloo Township was then in Waterloo County. Death reg. 006429-19 Toronto, York Co. Thomas Tilt died Nov. 12, 1919, age 79 years, 6 months. Place of death 54 Albany Ave. Place of birth Blair, Waterloo Co. Place of burial Goderich. Physician Dr. C. W. Clark. Informant G. W. C. Graham Co., 715 Dovercourt Road. George W. C. Graham was an undertaker. The archives of the Toronto Star and the Globe have been searched for a death notice for both Thomas and Martha without result. Your researcher is sometimes slow on the uptake. For years, I have looked over this era of death registrations in Toronto, probably by way of Ancestry's indexing, and failed to notice that they were (very roughly) alphabetical. Also numerical. There are essentially two forms. One form is headed Register of Deaths. The information on this form is limited and does not state, for example, place of birth or burial. The other form is rather the more typical one headed Deaths. This one noted both place of birth and place of burial. A problem so far as Thomas Tilt is concerned is that his surname is poorly written on this second form, but also that there is a sort of check mark through it. The person doing the indexing on Ancestry didn't have much of a chance. For the moment at any rate Ancestry's image number for this more informative form is 1869. The alpha entries on either form might be said to follow the one or the other. In reality, there was probably a rather more proper notification of death sitting in front of the clerks and these forms were probably numbered. The numbering system so far as entries on either form are concerned is light years from consecutive, but there are series of consecutive numbers. None of which will interest the families, but might be of some assistance to other researchers. |
