| Note | For Elizabeth's year of birth, 1855 approximately, we draw on the 1861 census in Waterloo Township. Her parents are deceased and she is living with her grandmother Kinsey. She is shown as age 7 as of her next birthday. She may have been born as early as 1854. The 1871 census shows Elizabeth Newcomb, age 16, in Galt. She is with her sister Barbara in the household of Benjamin Burkhoulder. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Kinzie (Kinsey), age 64, is living in the previous household with John and Mary Leaster. Elizabeth Kinsey is shown as a teacher. In 1881, Elizabeth Newcomb, age 25, is in the household of Henry and Sarah Clarke in Toronto. In 1891, Elizabeth is still with Henry and Sarah Clarke, though by this time they are in Ingersoll. Elizabeth has yet to be found again until the 1921 census where she is located in Ingersoll. Elizabeth's dates of death and burial agree with the Mount Pleasant Cemetery page for 1930. She was buried in a plot owned by Henry B. Clarke of 149 Balsam Ave. Henry was the husband of Elizabeth's sister Sarah. The Clarke name is generally spelled with an E on census forms, but without the E on the family gravestone in Mount Pleasant. |
