Note | For the following see the web page of the Glanbrook Heritage Society and their extracts of death notices as they appear in the Hamilton Spectator. http://www.glanbrookheritage.ca/ This quotes a notice from the Spectator's edition of Thursday, November 19, 1896, and tells of the Thomas Tilt family of Goderich receiving word from Rossland, British Columbia, of the sudden death of their son Albert. No explanation is given. Thomas is identified as the proprietor of the British Exchange Hotel in Goderich. The story goes on to say that Albert left Goderich 'a few weeks ago' to seek his fortune in the gold region, and tells that he was the second son of Mr. Tilt lost within a year. A record of a grave for Albert in B.C. has been sought, but not found. Albert's name is inscribed along with those of two of his brothers on his parents' gravestone in Section F of Maitland Cemetery, Goderich. A transcription of this stone has been done by the Huron County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, but CanGenWeb also has an excellent photo of the sons' inscriptions on the granite piller. Albert's inscription places his burial in Rossland, B.C. Looking over Rossland cemeteries, it's difficult to see just which actual cemetery he might be buried in. All considered, his burial may have been quite informal. |
