From Ancestry and London Metropolitan Archives, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1936, Page 25, Marriages Solemnized in the Parish of St. Matthew Brixton in the County of Surrey in the year 1826 William Tilt of this parish, bachelor, and Jane Cosens of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by Banns, 25th December, 1826, by me, Richard Cattermole, asst. min. The bride and groom were apparently able to sign their names, though this isn't directly evident on the form. Other marriages on the form do indicate when the bride and groom signed with an X. Note | At first glance, it's tempting to make Cassel the birth place of William Tilt. In places, it appears written as 'Cafsel'. The 'fs' is an antique form of the double ss. Still, looking over a map of the area, Capel is quite close to Dorking in Surrey and it is from Dorking that the family is said to have come. The distrance between Dorking and Capel is said to be approximately five miles. Baptism information for the children does seem to make the correct name of the place Capel. An embarkation list shows William and Jane as ages 27 each when they sailed for Canada in 1832. This is probably not far off, but they had with them three children whom baptism information confirms as being their own. They are shown as John 7, William 5, and Jane 3 months. Agewise, this is gloriously fouled up. Baptism information for these three children does not show their dates of birth, but they were all baptized at Capel and it is reasonable that they were done sequentially, relative to their dates of birth. William Cosens Tilt was baptized April 23, 1827 Jane Tilt was baptized January 3, 1830. (She was born 19 November, 1829). And John Tilt was baptized 7 August, 1831. Images of the baptism pages have been found for William and Jane; only a transcription of John's baptism has been found. All three children were baptized in Capel. William and Jane's baptisms identify William Tilt, their father, as a schoolmaster. The 1851 and 1861 censuses in Waterloo Township have him as a merchant. |
