FHL Film nbr. 919209 The initial list of children for Benjamin and Hannah is taken from the 1851 census as enumerated in Caledon Township of Peel County and the 1871 census at Tecumseth Township in Simcoe County. It is reasonably possible to account for 14 children, going by the available enumerations. The only family members found thus far in the 1861 census are son John and daughter Bethia who appear together in the 1861 census in Caledon Township. The 1861 censuses for Caledon and Tecumseth have been searched in Peel and Simcoe counties. It seemed possible that the available indexes might be compromised by poor handwriting on the part of the enumerators. This does not appear to be the situation, though there are pages in Tecumseth that are faded to the point of unreadability. Where poor imaging was evident, the available images at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) were consulted. These do result in some improvements, but there are pages that, by the time of microfilming, were iredeemable. The paper pages were microfilmed and then destroyed by fire decades ago. In any event such as we have with the microfilm is the most likely to benefit from updated technology for improved reading of what has survived on the microfilm. That Benjamin and Hannah had fourteen children seems like a lot, but, given the era, the list we do have may not be complete. Surviving gravestones may have more to say.
