The handwriting on the marriage registration is that of John Dykes who was the recording clerk at Galt. His handwriting is such as to encourage a course in creative reading. There are some illegibilities on the registration, most of which are decipherable, but the name of the clergyman required a bit more help. He was Rev. John Ridley who was minister at the Anglican Church in Galt.

One obvious error that appears on the entry is the surname of Ellen's parents. They were William and Sarah Clark, not Levitt. This error is not that of John Dykes, but of John Ridley. The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed Trinity Anglican Church's marriage records from the era and Ridley has entered Levitt as Ellen's parents' surname.

DeathShe died on 5 February 1924 at Galt, Waterloo Co., at age 79.

NoteIn 1887, Ellen married widower Alfred James Pitts.

When your researcher was little more than a child, Vera Coleman mentioned to him of two families, one of which at least was a family connection, and that they resided in houses that were kitty-corner at Centre and Elliott Streets in Galt. The wife of one family had been widowed and, likewise, the husband of the other. Both had a number of children. The surviving spouses married and moved into the yellow brick house at the south west corner of Centre and Elliott. They had quite a housefull of children from their first marriages as well as having two more by their own union. The 1891 census shows something of this, for there are 14 childen in the household.

A note here. The children are separated in this census by their surnames - Lovett and Pitts. This is a mess. Generally speaking, the enumerator somehow got the surnames of the children reversed and his list should not be relied upon. The names of the children as shown in this tree will be (mainly) closer to the truth, though your researcher may have missed a name or two. Add to that, there may have one or two children from either family that died in infancy and for whom we have no record.
