| Note | William Edward Lovett's birth was February 1, 1841, per the obituary that appeared in the Christian Guardian (see below). This also tells that he was born in the east end of London. With this, we are on safe ground to identify his baptism as the following: Page 265, Baptisms solemnized in the parish of St. Anne, Limehouse, in the County of Middlesex, in the year 1841. William Edward Lovett Baptism date November 28, 1841, birth date February 1, 1841. Parents William and Catherine Rosetta Lovett, residence Limehouse. Father's occupation cooper. Clergyman J. Richardson. The 1841 census at Limehouse, Tower Hamlets, shows William, age 4 months, with his parents, William and Catherine, and his sister Catherine, age 5. The 1851 census shows William at All Saints, Poplar, Tower Hamlets. He is with his parents, William and Catherine Rosetta Lovett. His father is shown as a journeyman cooper. He now has four siblings. The 1861 census has the family at Bromley in the Tower Hamlets. His mother Catherine is now a widow. She is shown as age 50 and a grocer. William is the oldest child present, age 20 and a shipwright, and he is shown with three siblings present. William married Ellen Clark on 5 December, 1861, at Popar in the Tower Hamlets, London's east end. (See marriage notes.) William Edward Lovett and his wife, Ellen Clark, sail for Canada from London on the SS Ganges and arrive at Quebec City on July 13, 1870. Also aboard this vessel are Ellen's parents, William George Clark and Sarah Street, as well as two of Ellen's brothers, Henry and Charles. As of the 1871 Canadan census, they reside in Galt, Waterloo County, Ontario, and they have with them five children. They reside in quite a full household, for they are with Ellen's parents, William G. & Sarah Clark; Ellen's sister Thirza, now with the surname Mann. With Thirza is a son Alexander. Also present are Ellen's brothers, Henry and Charles Clark. The 1881 census at Galt shows them in their own residence. They have with them nine children. Death reg. 022917-84 Toronto, York Co. William Lovett died August 12, 1884. Age 42. Machinist and carpenter. Born London, England. Methodist. Cause of death accident. Physician and informant W. H. B. Aikins, M.D., Toronto The above death registration for William is spare to put it mildly. A rather fuller report of his demise appears in Volume 10, Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1884 to 1890, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now Ottawa), page 263. Here, McKenzie quotes from the May 13th, 1885, edition of the Christian Guardian, page 299, which is more informative. It tells that he was born in the east end of London, England, on February 1, 1841, that he came to Canada in 1870 and was converted to Methodism in 1871 in Galt. He was an employee of Cowan & Company and went about the country to superintend and install their machinery. The obituary goes on to say that he was unloading an engine in the 'M. book room' (the Methodist Book Room?) when the stays gave way and the engine bed fell upon him causing his death. He is said to be survived by his wife and 11 children, one of them an infant. The handwriting of the recording clerk at Galt is difficult to decipher, hence the indexing is poor. Still, the names of 11 children have been found. Whether this precisely agrees with the statement in the above obituary is questionable. One child, Ada Ellen died in 1867, so, by way of such search resources as might be mustered, Ellen had ten surviving children. She had two more with Alfred Pitts. (The August 13, 1884, edition of the Globe Toronto, page 6, does have the story of the accident. It is not very readable, but does not appear to add anything significant.) Note that William is buried in Section 3 of what is now Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge/Galt. At the time of his death the name of the cemetery was The Galt Cemetery, not being renamed Mountview until 1886. William Lovett is shown as one of the original trustees of Wesley Church (Ainslie Street Methodist, at the time), Galt, in 1879. See page 23 of Wesley United Church, Cambridge, Ontario, 1854-1979. |
