Lawrence Purvis Lawrason
ID # 2801, (1808-1890)
Father | Miller Lawrason (1768-1847) |
Mother | Elizabeth Purvis (1770-1834) |
Birth | Lawrence Purvis Lawrason was born in 1808 at Ancaster. |
Marriage | He married Maria Thomas on 2 November 1829 at Mohawk Chapel, Brantford. The marriage of Lawrence and Maria is recorded in the Records of the Mohawk Chapel, Grace Anglican Church, Brantford, and reads: Lawrence P. Lawrason, to Maria Thomas, both of Dumfries. 2 Nov. 1829, Brantford, by banns. Wit. Wm. S. Curtis and Joseph Keifer. The marriage was performed by Rev'd. R. Lugger The above is to be found recorded in two publications. The first is Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West, Volume 2, Part 2, Gore District, 1824-1869, Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press/Global Genealogy, 2013, and Brant County 1827-1835, Marriages, Grace Anglican Church, Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, Brantford, Publication 87, Vol. 1. The first publication places the marriage in the Chapel of the Mohawk; the second at Grace Anglican. The Walker & Stratford-Devai publication makes it clear that the two were related. There is probably more to the history. |
Marriage | He married Jane Rowns on 27 July 1859 at Oxford County. For starters, we have the following transcription: County Marriage Registers of Ontario Canada, 1858-1869, Vol 26, Oxford County Index, Elizabeth Hancocks, C.G., Global Heritage Press, has the following Laurason Lawrence, 50, Dumfries, Canada, s/o Miller and Elizabeth, married 27 July 1859 Jane Rowns, 53, E Oxford, Canada, d/o John Evans. Note | This tree records Lawrence Purvis Lawrason as the son of Miller Lawrason and Elizabeth Purvis. At first glance, we run into difficulty. Delores MacIntyre, in her 'Some Records of the Lawrason Family' 1993, revised 2000, shows on page 40 a copy of the first page of a lawyer's letter, a copy of which was evidently provided to the family. It is dated February 13th, 1848, at St. George, and is addressed to Pardee and Garvy of Sarnia. The second page of the letter appears to be lost. The letter lists the children of Miller and Elizabeth, and one of them is shown as Laral, or Larah Lawrason. No record for such a person to this point has been found, but sufficient evidence has been found to clearly show that Miller and Elizabeth had a son named Lawrence Purvis Lawrason. The name as shown in the lawyer's letter may have been some manner of abbreviation. (Perhaps it should be mentioned, to avoid confusion, that Miller Lawrason has evidently named a son Lawrence Lawrason after his brother Lawrence Lawrason, who settled in what became London, Ontario.) The above book, on pages 66 to 68, to some extent discusses the children of Lawrence Lawrason as presented in the Stuart Lawrason chart of 1929. Mrs. MacIntyre favored me with a copy of the chart and Stuart Lawrason appears to discuss the children of lawrence and his first wife Maria, leaving out only one child by a later marriage. Lawrence first married Maria Thomas on 2 November 1829 in the Mohawk Chapel at Brantford. This marriage appears in the Mohawk Chapel records. By Maria Thomas it would appear that he had most of his children with one exception. A death record for Maria has not to this point been found, but they may have been married for close to thirty years, for we next find in the Oxford Co. Marriage Reg., Laurason Lawrence, 50, Dumfries, Canada, s/o Miller and Elizabeth, married 27 July 1859 Jane Rowns, 53, E Oxford, Canada, d/o John ...illeg. This is the record that makes it clear that his parents were Miller and Elizabeth. We may also note that Lawrence and Jane have both been widowed. His marriage to Jane Evans Rowns must have been of short duration, for we find that he marries Ann McGillis 17 September 1863. We find this in Early Justice of Peace Marriages Performed in Buffalo, Erie County, N.Y., 1840-80, written and published by A. Jewitt, Hamburg, N.Y., 1984: 'Lawrence P. Lawrason of Dumfrices, C.W. and Ann McGillis of Ancaster, C.W. married 17 September 1863.' Again, we have no death record for Ann, but we find in the 1870 census in Clinton County, Michigan, Lawrence P. Lawrence living with Abigail, apparently his wife, and a daughter Catharine, later referred to as Cassie, age 5. Abigail died of typhoid fever on 13 July 1876 at Dallas Township in Clinton County. She is said to have been a married woman. Lawrence then married Maria Provost Finch on 29 October 1879 in Clinton County. In the 1880 census in Duplain Township she appears with Lawrence. With them are her two children, Kate and Charles Finch, and his daughter Cassie. At the risk of laying this on a bit thick, but based on the evidence, we find that Lawrence married a 6th time in 1888 to a Mary Bigham in Stanton, Montcalm, Michigan. Based on parentage given, namely M. Lawrason and Elizabeth Pervis, inescapably he is our Lawrence. By 1890, Lawrence Purvis Lawrason is back in Canada at Fergus where he died. Some care is needed with the above records, for he has a son in Clinton County referred to at times as Lawrence, Alexander, Nathaniel, and A.N. Who all these persons were is not entirely clear and remains to be resolved. Death reg. 018076-90 Fergus, Wellington Co. Lawrence Pervis Lawrence Lawrason died twenty first day of June 1890, age eighty three years, yeoman. Born Twp. of Ancaster, County of Wentworth. Informant W. Lawrason of Galt, grocery clerk. The deceased was a Methodist. Delores MacIntyre spent some time in Hamilton in conversation with Stuart Lawrason. Her notes from these conversations are taken as a starting point in recording the children and grandchildren of Lawrence Pervis Lawrason. It may be noted that the 1851 Agricultural census for Beverly Township shows Laurence P. Lawrason as being on C6-L1. This appears on page 2 of the agricultural census for district 2. The 1851 every person census for Beverly, for the most part, has not survived. |
