| Note | We find a marriage record for Lawrence and Maria on 29 October 1879 in Clinton County, with her maiden name shown as Provost, and we find them together in the 1880 census at Duplain Twp., in Clinton County. With them are two children by her first marriage, Kate Finch, dressmaker, age 26, and described as Lawrence's step daughter, and Charles Finch, age 22, described as step son and working in a saw mill. Also with them is Lawrence's daughter Cassie, age shown as 17, and 'at home'. With the above information, it is not difficult to find Maria Finch, widow, in Duplain Twp., Clinton Co., in the 1870 census. She has with her five children, ages 21 to 12, including Kate and Charles, and a 13 year old girl by the name of Ella Bell (relationship not given.) In the 1850 and 1860 censuses, we find Maria with her first husband Seeley Finch, in Xenia, Ohio. Other researchers state that Seeley died in 1868 in Elsie, Clinton Co., in a sawmill accident. We will note here that Find-a-Grave provides a transcription-only for the surname Lawrason, a person who died on 5 December, 1887, age 40 yrs., 8 mos., 8 days. This cemetery is the Duplain Township, Elsie Village Cemetery, and who this person might be remains to be further researched. If the available information is correct, then the age is such that this is not likely the grave of Maria. |
