Luther Baltimore Russell

Father | George Washington Russell |
Mother | Rachel Vrooman (1781-) |
Birth | Luther Baltimore Russell was born on 22 December 1822 at Stamford Township. |

Death | He died on 2 May 1901 at St. Thomas, Ontario, at age 78. |
Burial | He was buried on 4 May 1901 at Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario. |
Note | Census information is at some variance, but, mainly, it appears that Luther Russell was born around 1822-23. Luther's death registration places his birth at Lundy's Lane which is in Stamford Township. The 1860 U.S. census shows Luther and his family in Niagara Town, New York. His children are shown as being born in Canada, including the youngest, Emily, with the exception of his second youngest, William, who is shown as being born in New York State. (Later records are at some variance and it appears that several children were born in New York State.) The 1865 New York State census is an excellent document, for it shows Luther and Mary with all the children born to them at that point (perhaps). Mary Ann is shown to have born ten children and they are all present. Only Jessie, so far as we can tell, was born later. The younger children show rather mixed places of birth and it might indicate the family moving back and forth across the border, or perhaps Mary moved in with family in Ontario when later children were born. Luther was a blacksmith and it's possible that his work occasioned the family to move back and forth across the border. The 1845 baptism of daughter Margaret at Chippawa shows Luther and Mary as being of Niagara Falls, N.Y., so it is entirely possible that the family's residence in Niagara Falls, New York was of some duration. Certainly, by the time of the 1871 census, Luther and Mary Ann are back in Canada (at Stamford) and they seem to have remained in Ontario for the rest of their lives. Luther died in St. Thomas, Ontario, in 1901, not long after the 1901 census was taken. At the time of the census, he was residing with Alice Sanders, his daughter. On the same census page is Amanda Loftus, another daughter, but he was likely residing with Alice at the time of his death. Interestingly, we have two death registrations for Luther: One filed in St. Thomas and one in Niagara Falls, son Walter registering the latter. We may safely say that Luther died in St. Thomas, Ontario. See note below. Death reg. 008593-01 St. Thomas, Elgin County Luther B. Russell died May 2, 1901, age 79 years. Address 72 Hiawatha. Widower. Born Lundy's Lane. Church of England. Informant P.R. Williams. Death reg. 028349-01 Town of Niagara Falls, Welland County Luther B. Russell died May 2, 1901, age 78 years. Resided on Huron (Street?) Married. Car checker. Born Tp. of Stamford. Episcopal. Informant Walter Russell. As mentioned above, Luther and Mary Ann are back in Canada by the time of the 1871 census. The Niagara Falls Gazette of Niagara Falls, New York, in its issue of 22 October 1879, under a column entitled The Dominion (Canadian news), tells the following without benefit of cause or context: Luther Russell of Drummondville is spending a term of fifteen days imprisonment in the jail at Welland for contempt of court. A fuller explanation of this is to be found in the Welland Tribune, 17 October, 1879, page 3, col. 2 (see microfilm N250 reel 2). This reads under GAOL NEWS: Oct. 10, Luther Russell, Stamford, contempt of court in not paying debt as ordered on judgement summons. Settled and discharged. It appears that Luther's term of incarceration was less than 15 days. The Niagara Peninsula Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has published Extractions from Registers A & B, 1848-1902, including burials in the following cemeteries: All Saint's, St. John's, Trinity, Lundy's Lane, and Fairview/All Saints Church/Robinson Street/Niagara Falls, Ontario The following entry is the one source found thus far for Luther's middle name (other records only providing the initial B.) and a clear statement of his place of death. Luther Baltimore Russell, age 79, born Lundy's Lane, Stamford, Ont. Buried May 5, 1901, at Fairview Cemetery. Died at daughter's Mrs. Alice Samedon? (Sanders), St. Thomas, Ontario. The above entry in the burial register dates Luther's burial to May 5, 1901. Fairview's burial record shows his burial as May 4. As mentioned above, the 1865 New York State census shows them with ten children. It states that Mary bore ten children and that all are living. There is some possibility that there was another child. The Niagara Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides us with an index for the Morse Funeral home. Morse's book 1, page 271 shows that on September 26, 1849, Luther Russell ordered a small coffin and case. It does not say for whom it was ordered. A burial record has not been found. Such church records as provided by the Niagara Branch of the OGS have been examined and no cemetery record has been found. It's possible that this was for a child of Luther and Mary, but we have no way of being certain. |
