| Note | At the time of the 1891 census at Niagara Falls Village, Walter and Jennie are present with son George, age 3. Also with them is a widow by the name of Mary Leech, age 31, and her children Jennie, age 9, and Jno. E., age 6. Mary Leech is apparently Jennie Russell's sister. George's birth registration indicates that their maiden name was Thomas. The City of Niagara Falls website for cemeteries has a photo of Walter's gravestone. The photo isn't clear, but his death year appears to be 1949. It is possible that Walter and Jennie adopted sons in later years. The 1901 census at Niagara Falls, Ontario, shows them with their son George and also two others marked as sons. One is Edward, age 16, birthdate shown as Sept. 16, 1884. The other's name is illegible. He is marked as being age 26 and date of birth as December 12, 1874. The 1911 census provides some confusion, for Walter is shown with his wife who is named Mary E. and born in December of 1863. Her age is given as 47. The problem with this is that Jennie Thomas did not die until 1917. The photo of their stone in Fairview Cemetery is very obscrue as to their inscriptions, but she does appear to be buried with Walter. The 1911 census showing her as Mary E. is likely a mistake. Son George is still with them in 1911. Walter Vrooman Russell married Maud Jennings in Niagara Falls in 1924. He is said to be a market gardener in Ridgeville. A death or burial for Maud has not been found. |
