George Lincoln
ID # 7671, (1817-1899)
Birth | George Lincoln was born in 1817 at Parish of Scoulton, Norfolk, England. |
Christening | He was christened on 12 January 1818 at Parish of Scoulton, Norfolk. |
Marriage | He married Margaret Lee on 26 July 1841 at Mohawk Parsonage, Grace Anglican Church. The marriage of George and Margaret predates the existing Gore District marriage register. It is believed that there was an earlier one, which, if it has survived, has not been found. The record of the marriage of George and Margaret is to be found in the marriage records of Grace Anglican Church in Brantford. This has been transcribed by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and it may be found under their publications as Nbr. 87, Grace Anglican Church Marriages, Vol. 1, 1827-1846, page 6. This reads: Lincoln, George, of Brantford Township and Margaret Lee on July 26, 1841,at the Mohawk Parsonage. Abm. Nelles officiated. Witnesses Samuel Lee, William Lincoln, Matilda Freeman. George and Margaret were married in the Anglican Church, but appear to have been associated with the Wesleyan Methodist Church from not long after the time of their marriages. |
Marriage | He married Mary Grace Bawtinheimer, daughter of William Bawtinheimer and Rachel Belinda (Bella) Chrysler, on 8 February 1865 at Brant County. MS248 reel 5, Vol. 1, page 169 Brant County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Death | He died on 27 June 1899 at West Flamborough Twp., Wentworth Co., Ontario. |
Note | In 1884, George married for a third time. This was to Bertha Metcalfe of Burford. Here, he provides the names of his parents, William Lincoln and Susan Andrews. With this information we find George's baptism listed in the baptism record book in the Parish of Scoulton in the County of Norfolk, England. This shows Georges date of baptism as January 12, 1818. This does not tell his date of birth, but considering a baptism date so early in the year, he was almost certainly born a few weeks prior. Certainly, in later baptisms, where the date of birth is also provided, this is mostly the situation. Although George and Margaret were married at the Anglican Church in Brantford, they do appear to have spent the rest of their lives as Wesleyan Methodists. We will note here that we are fortunate to have a record of their marriage at all. There almost certainly was an early marriage register for the Gore District that went missing. The one surviving begins in 1843. One or two baptism records for George's children have been found. No doubt all will have been baptized in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, but not all clergy were assiduous in returning baptism records to the central recording office. George and Margaret were living in Onondaga Township at least by the time of the 1851 census (actually begun in January of 1852). They have with them children Elizabeth 9, Mary 6, and Sarah Ann 3. George and Margaret are still in Onondaga Township in the 1861 census and with the same children as appear in the 1851 census. The 1861 census was begun in Canada West on January 4. Margaret died in October of that year. George married a second time to Mary G. Bawtinheimer of Ancaster in 1865. Mary and two daughters died in January of 1876, all of diptheria. George married for a last time to Bertha Metcalfe of Burford in 1884. He died in West Flamborough Township in 1899. The list we have of George's children is probably not complete. Death reg. 027832-99 West Flamborough Twp., Wentworth Co. George Lincoln died June 27, 1899. Age 84 years. Place of death lot 13, concession 1 (of West Flamborough). Farmer. He is shown as married. Born England. Methodist. Physician and informant James Ross M.D. |
