Margaret Lee

ID # 7672, (1825-1861)
BirthMargaret Lee was born in 1825 at Ireland.
MarriageShe married George Lincoln on 26 July 1841 at Mohawk Parsonage, Grace Anglican Church.
The marriage of George and Margaret predates the existing Gore District marriage register. It is believed that there was an earlier one, which, if it has survived, has not been found. The record of the marriage of George and Margaret is to be found in the marriage records of Grace Anglican Church in Brantford. This has been transcribed by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and it may be found under their publications as Nbr. 87, Grace Anglican Church Marriages, Vol. 1, 1827-1846, page 6. This reads:

Lincoln, George, of Brantford Township and Margaret Lee on July 26, 1841,at the Mohawk Parsonage. Abm. Nelles officiated. Witnesses Samuel Lee, William Lincoln, Matilda Freeman.

George and Margaret were married in the Anglican Church, but appear to have been associated with the Wesleyan Methodist Church from not long after the time of their marriages.

DeathShe died on 11 September 1861.
BurialShe was buried at Deagle Mason Cemetery, Onondaga Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteConflicting information for the date of death of Margaret Lee Lincoln is to be found. The first is an obituary that appeared in Volume 4 of Rev. Donald McKenzie's work Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa), page 200. Rev. McKenzie's extract is from the November 21, 1861 edition of the Christian Guardian, page 184. This tells that Margaret was born in Ireland in 1823 and came to Canada in 1835 and that she married George Lincoln in 1841. She died on the 14th ultimo (the previous month, October), but place of death was not given. This goes on to tell that she was of the Episcopalian Church until 1844 when she and her husband were converted to Methodism.

Most of this will be correct, or at least approximately so, but Interment.net carries a transcription of Deagle Mason Cemetery in Onondaga Township and this shows Margaret's date of death as 11 Sep 1861. This recording of the cemetery was done by Murray Fair, a careful and thorough transcriber, and this latter is probably correct.

Immediately following Margaret's obituary in the Guardian is that of her daughter Sarah Ann. This appeared in the Guardian edition of April 20, 1864, page 67. This tells that Sarah Ann died of consumption in Onondaga on October 6, 1863, and identifies her as the daughter of George and the late Margaret Lincoln.

Interment.net transcriptions are presented alphabetically and while we can't be sure, it's probable that Sarah Ann, who is in Deagle Mason Cemetery, is buried beside her mother. Mr. Fair, in his transcription, tells that the stone for Sarah Ann shows no dates. Hence, with Sarah Ann, we accept her date of death as being that as published in the Guardian.
