Note | Alfred Stevens Brown, in a letter to his son Egerton, states that his father had four wives. The first two are named: Sarah Dennis and Jane Wilson, or Willson. Alfred does not name the other two wives. A burial in the Society of Friends Hicksite Cemetery in Ajax shows his third wife to be Sarah Gibson. A record for his 4th marriage in 1892 shows that she was was Catherine Farquarson Howard, a widow, age 58. This appears to be the list of Sherman's four wives. Death reg. 004102-11 Toronto, York Co. Sherman Brown died July 2, 1911, at 25 Dundonald Ave. Age 88. Retired farmer. Widower. Physician D. A. Clark. Informant Wm. Speers, 1764 Dundas Street. Date registration filed July 5, 1911. The death registration shows Sherman's death as July 2; his gravestone in Society of Friends Hicksite Cemetery in Ajax shows his death as July 3. The gravestone is probably correct. A note here about the family cemetery. The cemetery was transcribed in 1988 by the Whitby-Oshawa branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The paper is entitled Society of Friends Cemetery, Conc 2 lot 5 Pickering Township. Formerly best described as being situated in Pickering Township, this sits in what is now a commercialized area of Ajax behind a large mall with a huge parking lot. This is just off Kingston Road. The cemetery is entirely surrounded by spruce trees and seems quite isolated from the modern world. The setting is actually quite attractive. Close by, and a part of the mall, sits the stone Brown family farmhouse (just who built it is unclear). This houses commercial offices and, viewed from the outside, appears to be in excellent condition. |
