| Note | Alfred Brown's career was varied and included teaching and insurance. For at least a brief time, he and Hannah were in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and appear there in the 1911 census. With them is Annie Carswell who is working for them as a domestic. She is the sister of Katie Carswell who appears in the 1911 census in Galt with Theron and Jane Buchanan, also working as a domestic. How long the Browns were in Winnipeg is unknown, but Annie Carswell was in Glen Morris in 1912 where she married John Murray of North Dumfries in June of the year. Annie and John are buried in Ayr Cemetery. Burial information for Alfred Stevens Brown presents a problem. The names of A. Stevens Brown and Hannah Buchanan appear on the Buchanan stone in Mountview Cemetery in Galt. The burial card shows that their ashes, apparently those of them both, came to Mountview after Hannah died in 1957. However, there is a burial record for Alfred S. Brown at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland. It shows that his ashes were placed in nitch 137 on March 20, 1944. A descendant tells of visiting the niche and seeing an urn sitting there. Possibly some of Alfred's ashes are in both places. Either way, Mountview records having ashes and Alfred's name is on the Buchanan family gravestone in Mountview Cemetery, Galt. |
