NoteThe following transcription exists for the Keachie stone in Mountview Cemetery in Galt:

29E-17-4

(Buried, shattered) IMO/James Keachie/broken/aug (?) 11, 1791/Died Dec. 27, 1851.

Obviously, the stone is in bad shape. Such information that we have suggests that James was a year or so younger than his wife Elizabeth. 1791 may be a correct interpretation, but something like 1799 seems more reasonable.

James was likely originally buried at the First Church Cemetery at High Park, his remains then moved to Mountview, probably with the original stone, at the time when the Presbyterian cemetery was closed and the remains taken to Mountview in the 1880s.

The first record for James Keachie in Dumfries Twp. is to be found in the Dickson Papers. He is recorded as purchasing the south half of lot 1 on the 10th concession on October 26, 1820.

It is believed that James Keachie had two brothers and that they settled in the Dumfries/Beverly Township area. There is a story that the Keachies that settled in Beverly pronounced their name, at least in later years as 'Keechie'. The Keachies of Dumfries pronounced as 'Ket-chie', and this was the familiar pronunciation with family connections in Galt.
