By license in Dumfries on January 5, 1849

Donald McLean and Matilda Keachie, both of Dumfries
Witnesses Robert McLean and James Keachie

Parts of the above are nearly unreadable on the microfilmed copy. It is possible to discern that the marriage was held by license in Dumfries, (probably at the home of the bride's parents). The bride's name is just readable, but those of the groom and witnesses are badly faded.

We do however, also have the record that Rev. Strang submitted to the district registrar and portions of the above are extracted from the record below.

MS248 reel 1 Vol. 4, page 119
Gore District Marriage Register
Submitted by Rev. Strang

Donald McLean and Matilda Keachie, both of Dumfries on January 5th, 1849. Witnesses Robert McLean and James Keachie.

The location of the marriage is, typically, omitted from the district marriage registers. The First Church record book, on the other hand, at least locates the marriage in Dumfries, or Galt, or Beverly, etc. After that, without a newspaper record we are left guessing as to whether the marriage was at the bride's home or that of another family member.
