John Cumming

ID # 2658, (1804-1867)
BaptismJohn Cumming was baptized in 1804 at Scotland.
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Able, daughter of David Able and Mary Dineen, in 1841.
The very little we know of Elizabeth Abel's marriage to John Cumming is taken from Vol. 8, Obituaries From The Canada Christian Advocate, 1873-1884, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2007.

The book transcribes her obituary from the March 7, 1883, issue of the Canada Christian Advocate, page 6. It simply states that she married John Cumming of Beverly in 1841. It says that she joined the 'Troy appointment of the ME Ch. in her youthful days.' Since the Methodist Episcopal Church was at Troy, probably the marriage was held at Troy.

DeathHe died on 28 July 1867.
BurialHe was buried at Troy Cemetery.
NoteA note here to do with John Cumming's Beverly Township land records, so far as they have been found. Also note that only the 1851 agricultural census and the Abstract Indexes for Beverly have been examined. Fuller pictures would no doubt be gained by looking at the referred transactions in the land registers.

District 1, page 3, of the 1851 agricultural census for Beverly (most of the every person census has not survived) shows John Cumming with half of lot 9 on the third concession. The census does not state which half. The Abstract Index for this lot, however, indicates that this was the south half of the lot (100 acres) which he purchased from Peter Jones et ux (and wife) for 250 pounds on 10 September 1848. George Main (Sr) purchased the north half from Stephen B. Matteson for 200 pounds on 21 August 1841.

This north half was still in George Main's possession when he died 1890, according to his will. George may have never resided on the property or only have done so for a short time, for in later years he resided in Dumfries Township and, finally, in Galt. Similarly, John Cumming Jr. (so named) purchased 66 acres from John Coleman et ux, a portion of the south half of lot 6 of the third concession on 14 October, 1851. Given that John Coleman Sr. died in 1844, this transaction was with John Coleman Jr. and his wife, Caroline Sabrina Smith.

Given that John Cumming, son of John and Elizabeth, was born in approximately 1850, we may discount him as being part of the above transaction. It may be that John Cumming, husband of Elizabeth Abel, was sometimes known as John Cumming Jr. The difficulty with this is that, probably, John's parents were Alexander Cumming, died July 14 1851, age 52, and Margaret McKenzie, died Dec. 15, 1897, age 91. This information is found in a transcription of Troy Cemetery done by the Hamilton Branch of the OGS.

John Cumming et ux (our John and Elizabeth) sold the 66 acres on C3-L6 to Robert Romans on 6 July, 1865.

Given that our best information for the children of John and Elizabeth places their births in Beverly Township, it seems reasonable to believe that the family resided on the half township lot, C3-L9 (south half) and that the 66 acres on the 3rd concession was an investment which was either worked or leased.
