Note | Initially, the list of children for Charles and Esther is taken from the 1861 census in Nissouri West Township. Charles and Esther also appear in the 1851 census in Nissouri West. One child, a son, is with them, age 1. His name appears to be presented in three parts, though badly written. It looks like Isaac Genl Hoyt Vrooman. (A re-examination of the handwriting shows his name to be Isaac Gent Hoyt.) This does not agree with the ordering of the 1861 list, but the 1861 list is taken as a place to begin. It may be noted that the 1861 census shows Hoyt and John Vrooman as the same age, so it would seem they were twins. Interestingly, in 1851, Esther's parents (apparently) are with them. They are shown as Raymond Hoyt, age 71, born USA, and Elinor Hoyt, age 63, born Nova Scotia. Some children of Charles and Esther, in their marriage registrations, give their place of birth as Caradoc Township. This is entirely possible, though West Nissouri seems the more likely. Charles and Esther were in West Nissouri as late as the 1871 census, but by 1881 they are in Caradoc with Hoyt Vrooman and his wife who is shown as Mary Elloner Vrooman. Charles and Esther Vrooman, along with son Hoyt Vrooman and his family, do not appear to be in Ontario by the time of the 1891 census. It would seem that by this time, Charles and Esther are with son Hoyt in Sanilac County in Michigan. The 1890 U.S. census is unavailable to us, having been stored in a building that was destroyed by fire. Our best sense of what became of the family is from Michigan marriage and death records. Also, it appears that the Fremont Township Cemetery in Sanilac County was the family's burial place of choice and son John and his wife, both of whom died in London, Ontario, are buried there as well. Such burial information as we have is taken from a transcription. It may be noted that the Fremont Township Cemetery is sometimes referred to as the Roseburg Cemetery. The cemetery transcription dates Charles' death to June 2, 1894. This is borne out by an entry, nbr. 186, on a page of Sanilac County list of deaths. The date shown for the death is June 2, 1894, for Charles Vroman, and gives his age as 89 years, 6 months and 10 days. He is shown as 'married', though, to the best of our knowledge, he was a widower. He died in Fremont. He is described as a farmer, born in Ontario, and is said to have died of old age. After that, the information is not much help, for it shows his parents as William and Eliza Vroman, both, were the entry to be believed, residing in Fremont, Michigan. The registration was made on June 19, 1895, but since most other registrations on the page are so recorded, this may simply have been the date of preparing the page. There is evidence, based on marriage registrations of Charles' children, that Charles middle name was William. We know that his parents were Adam and Elizabeth. Considering that sons Hoyt and John and their families are all buried in the same cemetery and in section C, we must consider that the death registration page is in at least partial error. The transcription of the Charles' gravestone shows Charles birth date as December 26, '180?'. Calculating Charles' age based on his death registration would place his birth year to approximately 1805. Based on his age as presented in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses in West Nissouri Township in Middlesex County, and given his day and month of birth as shown on his death registration, it seems reasonable to infer a birth year of 1808. This will be approximate. Again, while we cannot know for certain, Charles was likely born in the Niagara District. |
