NoteHe An excellent document relating to the family of Raymond Hoyt is to be found on Canada Archives' microfilm C-6910 1839 Vol. 233 pages 127624-127626, Land Petitions in Upper Canada Sundries.

In this land petition, Raymond locates himself in North Oxford Township, County of Oxford, in the London District. He tells that he is late of Springfield in Kings County in the Province of New Brunswick.

Raymond does not identify his father, but tells that he was imprisoned by the rebels at the commencement of the American Revolutionary War. He goes on to say that his father escaped and 'remained on Long Island' until the end of the war, at which time he emigrated with his family to New Brunswick in 1783. Raymond, who at the time was about age 3, accompanied his family.

Raymond in his petition claims a land grant as the son of a United Empire Loyalist and that as such his father had been granted land.

(Many refugees from the United States were given land grants, but they were only enrolled Loyalists if they had joined the 'British Lines', in other words a fighting unit such as Butler's Rangers. Children of enrolled Loyalists received land grants as a matter of course. Where Raymond fit into this isn't at all clear, but may account for his petition being in the 'sundries' file. This researcher has not examined the Hoyts at any depth.)

The petition goes on to state that Raymond had married Eleanor Gent, daughter of Isaac Gent of Springfield, Pennsylvania, 'who fought under the Royal Standard through the Revolutionary War' and who was disbanded in Halifax in 1783.
