NoteOur initial information for Charles and Arabella Person and their children is taken from the 1851 census enumerated at Hamilton, Ontario. Charles purchased property in Westminster Township in 1852, including acreage on Concession B, lot 50. The land purchase was extensive and involved about 350 acres.

Arabella died in 1852 and at some point Charles married Eliza Cassady. Their daughter Rowena Person was born in 1854. Charles died, per one of the associated probate papers, on 14 December 1855. The paper actually states that he died on 14 December 1856, but since all the executors' papers were filed with the will for probate in January of 1856, we must take this to be an error. Interestingly, Charles signed his will on 14 December 1855. The will is lengthy, running to many pages, and he must have had it prepared, perhaps signing it sensing the end was near.

In the will he makes provision for all his children and his wife Eliza and he also provides for an unborn children which his wife was carrying. The will also provides for Charles Person's mother, unnamed, with a bequest of six pounds five shillings per annum. (A search has been done of censuses from 1851 to 1871 seeking a potential candidate for this lady without success.)

The executors of the will are Jonathan Bowman of the Township of West Flamboro, John Knowles of the Township of Delaware, John Cassady of the Township of Westminster, and John Gamble of the Township of Beverly. The relationship of John Cassady as being a member of his wife's family we may guess at, but the relationship of the other executors to Charles Person is unknown.

We do know that the Bowmans raised Ellen Elizabeth and that the Gambles raised Mary. In his will, Charles makes mention of property jointly owned by himself and Frederick Blain in the town of Dundas. Marriage registrations for the Blains indicate that Frederick's wife Harriet was a Morrison, probably a sister of Arabella's. At the time of the 1861 census, Frederick and Harriet Blain of Puslinch Township have with them Charles and James, though the enumerator spelled their names as Proson.

The 1851 census at Hamilton presents the oldest child in the household as Eliza with a second given name which is smudged. Her given names are now believed to be Eliza Jane. See notes under her name.

The name Person is occasionally spelled as Personne. On some census enumerations some children give their origin as French.
