Note | See page 844 of Ezra Eby's Volume 1, A Biographical History of Waterloo Township, etc., 1895. Here, Eby gives the briefest biography of John Kinzie (spelling of the name varies). He tells that John was born April 1st, 1800, and that he died June 7th, 1851. This death date is certainly incorrect. The transcription of Kinzie Biehn Cemetery tells that John died June 7, 1852, and this latter date will be closer to correct, if for no other reason than John appears in the 1851 census in Waterloo Township. This census was not begun until 12 January, 1852, and the age question asked was: What is your age as of your next birthday? The answer given was 52 years. This of course was not always accurate - it was the 1871 census where the question was a simple: How old are you? Still, Eby probably got John's birth year right. This, however, conflicts with the transcription of John's gravestone. He is said to have died on June 7, 1852. The available photo (Find-a-Grave) isn't entirely clear on his age at time of death - the number of months is obscure - but the Waterloo Wellington transcription of his gravestone tells that he was 51 years, 1 month, and 19 days of age when he died. This would place his year of birth to 1801. A more recently erected memorial stone dates his year of birth to 1800. What the source for this might be is unknown, but is probably correct. A note here with regard to the 1851 census. The handwriting of the Kinsey/Kinzie family name is very poor and, consequently, the name has been poorly indexed. When looking over the pages of Ancestry for Waterloo Township in this census, see image 274. As mentioned, Ezra Eby lists nine children for John and Elizabeth. The 1851 census has six children still living under the parental roof. Whoever erected the memorial stone in Kinzie-Biehn for John and Elizabeth also erected a stone (perhaps the reverse side) listing the names of their children and spouses. This appears to agree with Eby and Eby has been followed here along with other sources that will be mentioned. |
