| Note | Initially, we take information for the family of Garrett Howell from Volume 1 of Ancaster's Heritage which was published in 1973 by the Ancaster Township Historical Society. The copy to hand is evidently a reprinted edition for it has after page 304 an appendix of additions and amendments, which contains useful information. We should note here that much of the Howell family membership has been written by Mrs. William K. Dunham. She has done this in discussing ownership of Ancaster Township lots, particularly (see page 246) ot lot 19 on the 2nd concession. Mrs. Dunham must have had access to a family tree for much of the family shown can be reasonably confirmed. We may enlarge on this with information to be found in volumes of obituaries as written by Rev. Donald McKenzie and published by the Global Heritage Press of Milton (now of Ottawa.) At least some of this is reinforced by records made available by the Archives of Ontario. Another source is Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, by Bruce S. Elliott, Dan Walker, and Fawne Stratford-Devai, and published by the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1995. So, with thanks to Mrs. Dunham, we may say that Garrett Howell was married twice, first to Elizabeth Pulsey, 1760-1788, and then to Sarah Thatcher, 1767-1837. Confirming information for Elizabeth has yet to be found; with Sarah we are on stronger ground. Supporting evidence will be discussed in each individual's record. |
