| Note | Note that Garrett Howell and his second wife Sarah Thatcher had a son who they named Sampson in 1790. At first glance we must believe Sampson, born in 1781, the son of Garrett Howell and Elizabeth Pulsey, to be deceased. Strength is added to this assumption with an obituary for Daniel Howell who was born in 1782 and died in 1869. The obituary for Daniel appears in Vol. 4, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861-1871, transcribed by Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, and published by Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa). Rev. McKenzie's source is the Christian Guardian edition of June 2, 1869, page 88. This refers to Daniel as the eldest son of the late Garrett Howell, who came to Canada with his father and other family members in 1801. Daniel was born in 1782 and the second Sampson was born in 1790. It would appear that well before the family came to Canada around the year 1800 the first Sampson was deceased. |
