This early cemetery, also known as the Cainsville Burying Grounds, has stones going back to 1814, or at least did so when the cemetery was transcribed, as early as 1974. A later transcription was done in 2006. This is at Hwy. 2 and the Jerseyville Road (County Road nbr. 17).

The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society transcription shows Row 14, Stone 6, to be that of William Howell, 1811-1845, his wife Elizabeth Day, 1810-1890.

Stone 7 reads Wm. Howell died Aug 12, 1845, aged 33 yr's.
A note appended to this states: Bottom in concrete 2005.

This has the appearance of being a repair.

For the following, see Rev. Donald McKenzie's Vol. 1, Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1836-1850, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now Ottawa).

Page 157 has a death notice for William Howell. It tells that he died August 13, 1845, at Onondaga, which we must believe to be present day Ononadaga Township in Brant County. It tells that he was born in the Jersey Settlement at Ancaster of parents, both of whom are now deceased, and that he is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Day and 6 children. This information was taken from the October 29, 1845, edition of the Christian Guardian, page 5

The obituary records William's date of death one day later than that stated on his gravestone. The gravestone date is presumed here to be correct.
