Note | Christopher Teeple's will is to be found at the Archives of Ontario on microfilm reel MS638 reel 7 for anyone able to get there. For the moment, and without Christopher Teeple's will, we may reasonably associate Sarah Teeple Stewart with her parents, Christopher and Eleanor, if for no other reason than that Eleanor Lowery Teeple's obituary mentions Sarah as her daughter. We may also associate son Eli Teeple with Christopher and Eleanor, if for no other reason than Eli's naming his first daughter Ellener Lowery Teeple. After that, while it's true that Christopher and Eleanor spent some time in Nelson Township of the Gore District (later a township in Halton County), some care needs to be taken with who was a child of who. Based on Upper Canada Land Petitions, we find a Jacob Teeple petitioning for 200 acres of Crown Land in March of 1824. He dated his petition at York (later Toronto), but associated papers identify him as being of Nelson Township where the Christopher Teeple family sojourned for at least some years. The interesting aspect of Jacob's petition, however, is that he identifies himself as the son of Philip Teeple. Jacob, in his 1824 petition, tells that he 24 years of age. This would make his year of birth about 1800 (please forgive the complicated math!) and has been in the province about 18 years (since about 1806). The Abstract Index for lot 3 in the 1st concession (south of Dundas Street) in Nelson Township, tells that Philip Teeple purchased 50 acres (a quarter lot) on 8 March, 1817 (registered in September of the year), and that this piece of property was sold by the executors of the late Philip Teeple in 1845. Burial information for Philip has been sought, but not found. There is a wife of a Philip Teeple buried in Bowman United Church Cemetery in Ancaster Township who may or may not be the wife of Philip of Nelson. This same cemetery records a burial for a Jacob Teeple, born July 1, 1799, and who died April 27, 1882. He is in all probability Philip's son, this considering associated burials of women shown as wives of Philip...or more than one Philip. Conversely, land petitions do add two sons to Christopher Teeple. For this, see petition 48 in 1819. The petitioners were John Teeple and Matthew Teeple. They identify as being both of Nelson and being both the sons of Christopher Teeple. They state that they came into the province about 12 years previous. Agewise, they only state that they have both reached the age of 21, probably intending to say that they were of age of majority. For the following, see Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829 , Bruce Elliott, Dan Walker, and Fawne Stratford-Devai, Toronto, Ontario Genealogical Society, 1995., page 68. We have limited information for John, but a Matthew Teeple was in the 2nd Regiment of Gore Militia in approximately 1826 and he is shown as age 34. Personnel for this regiment was drawn from townships that included Nelson. Information has yet to be found to say that he was in service during the War of 1812. For the following, I am indebted to Fred Blair for his transcription of the Muster Roll of the 2nd York Militia, War of 1812. This shows as being present: Christopher Teeple John Teeple Philip Teeple The 2nd York drew men from several townships, Nelson and Ancaster included. Mr. Blair tells that the 2nd York was at several actions, including the battles of Stoney Creek and Lundy's Lane. One of their commanders, Titus Geer Simons, was severally wounded at Lundy's Lane. His wife heard of his injuries, drove a horse and wagon to where he was hospitalized, and took him home and nursed him back to health. How the Teeples fared isn't recorded, but they did survive for quite some years. |
