Note | For the following see Vol. 5 of Death Notices from the Christian Advocate, 1858-1872, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, page 314 The following was extracted from the January 26, 1859 edition of the Advocate, page 4, and tells that Mrs Eleanor Teeple, nee Lowry, was born in New York State on June 15, 1773. She moved with her husband Christopher to Pittsburgh in 1801 and to Canada in 1805. They lived near what became Hamilton until 1811 when they moved to Dundas Street in Nelson Township. In 1842 they moved to the Jersey Settlement in Ancaster Township where Christopher died in 1843. The obituary goes on to tell that Mrs. Teeple died on January 3rd, 1859 at the home of her grandson, J. C. Bell, age 85 years and 6 months. It also makes mention that her eldest daughter was Mrs. Stewart. The 'Jersey Settlement' is a rather generic term for an area that included portions of Ancaster, Beverly, and South Dumfries Townships where numbers of people settled that came from the State of New Jersey. The village of Jerseyville, rather central in Ancaster was a part of this area. Christopher Teeple and his wife Eleanor Lowery are buried in the Jerseyville Cemetery. |
