| Note | A death registration for Jane has not been found. The gravestone in section 4 of Mountview has a metal plate which inscribes the names of family members. This shows her as the wife of Stephen Moffatt and reads: Jane Thompson / wife of the above (Stephen Moffatt) / died October 12th 1871 / aged 65 years 6 months. Jane is with husband Stephen and her family as of the 1871 census, the enumeration of which was begun on April 2, 1871. The family was in North Dumfries at the time and we show this as the place of death. First Church does record her death on October 12th, but the location is not given. The 1851 and 1871 censuses place Jane's birth in Scotland. The 1861 census shows her birth as being in England. Considering that the children of Stephen and Jane, at least those that have been found and recorded in census information, were all apparently born in old Dumfries Township, or, later, in North Dumfries, it seems probable that the couple wasn't married until the two families were living in the township. Candidates for Jane's parentage have yet to be found, however. |
