Waterloo County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Robert Acheson, a minister of the U.P. Church of North America for the year ending 31st Decemeber, A.D. 1860

Adam Moffat, 27, born Dumfries, residing Beverly. Parents Step Moffat and Jane Thomson.
Jane Garrick, 2...(age obscured), born Beverly, residing Ancaster. Parents Jas. Garrick and Cath Car...
Witness Geo. Goodall of Galt.
On 22 November 1860

Some points:
The family name is generally spelled with two T's. Adam's family frequently used one T, but the name is spelled with two T's on their gravestone in Mountview Cemetery, Galt.

Adam's father's given name is abbreviated here as Step, but the same form, by this time, was used in the First Church records (see GS2987) and the short form appears there as Steph.

Jane's age is obscured in the marriage register. Her death registration shows her date of birth as 18 Dec 1832.

Jane's mother's name is mainly unreadable on the marriage registration. The death registration, which is faded, shows her maiden name as McCormick.

Finally, Robert Acheson filed his marriage registrations with Waterloo County whether they were held in Waterloo County or not. We have, however, the transcriptions of marriage notices done by Rosemary Ambrose from the Dumfries Reformer. The edition of 28 November, 1860, tells that Adam Moffat married Jane C. Garrick on 22 November in Galt. Rev Acheson was the clergyman and both Adam and Jane were of Beverly Township.

DeathHe died on 8 April 1877 at Beverly Township, Wentworth Co..
BurialHe was buried at Section 3, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
NoteDeath reg. 017503-77 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.
Adam Moffatt died April 8, 1877. Farmer. Presbyterian. Born Township of Dumfies, Ontario. Cause of death typhoid fever with pneumonia. Physician Dr. J. W. Smith. Informant Philip Green, teacher, Beverly.

Adam's age is given in the above registration. The handwriting is slightly illegible, but 41 might be intended. His age is shown on his gravestone in section 3 of Mountview Cemetery as 42. This would probably place his birth year to 1834. The 1851 census suggests that he was born in 1833. Either year might be right. First Church baptisms, however, begin in July of 1833 and the family did attend and later baptisms are to be found. Probably, Adam was born early in 1833 and baptized prior to July when Rev. James Strang began his baptism entries in the baptism book.

The 1861 census shows Adam and 'Mrs.' Moffatt in Beverly, ages 28 and 22 respectively. As yet, there are no children. The 1861 Beverly Agricultural census shows Adam at concession 6, lot 9, with all 200 acres.

By 1871, Adam and Jane, still in Beverly, have 4 children: Stephen 9; Kate 6; Jane 4; and James 2.

By 1881, Adam is deceased and Jane, shown as a widow, age 40. Son Stephen, age 19, is shown as the farmer. Adam and Jane have had two more children since the last census, John 6 and Adam 3.
