Waterloo County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. John Thomson, D.D., a minister of the Canada Presbyterian Church, for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1863

Robert H. Burnett, 36, born Dumfries, Scotland, residing North Dumfries (township). Parents Thomas Burnet and Agnes Hastie.
Christina MacKenzie, age obscured, born Halifax, Nova Scotia, residing Galt. Parents Thomas MacKenzie and Rebecca Russel.
Witness Arthur Burnet of North Dumfries.
On 27 November, 1863.

The county marriage registers do not typically show a specific marriage location. This does not, however, appear to be a First Church, Galt, marriage. Dr. Thomson was, at the time, minister at Knox Presbyterian Church in Galt. In 1989, the church suffered a fire in the annex which destroyed their old records. The Presbyterian Church Archives in Toronto do not show any early records for Knox in their finding aids.

MarriageHe married Emma Wainery Carter on 27 August 1889 at Brantford, Brant Co., Ontario.
Mrge reg. 001498-89 Brantford, Brant Co.
Robert H. Burnet, 59, widower, carpenter, Presbyterian. Born Scotland, residing Galt. Parents Thomas and Agnes Burnet.
Emma W. Sheppard, 49, widow, Church of England. Born England, residing Galt. Parents John and Anne Carter.
Witnesses Alick W. MacKenzie and Elizabeth T. Potts, both of Brantford.
On 27 August, 1889, Brantford, by G. C. MacKenzie, minister.

See OGS publication #95 Vol. 5, Marriages Grace Anglican Church, 1888-1898, City of Brantford. This agrees with the marriage registration on most points, but does record Robert's middle name as Hastie and Emma's middle name as Wainery. It also shows the second witness as Miss Lizzie Burwell, possibly the same person as Elizabeth T. Potts, or...a clerical error somewhere along the line. They do exist.

DeathHe died on 15 February 1900 at Hespeler, Waterloo Co., Ontario.
BurialHe was buried at Section 2, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
