NoteSee notes for Margaret Adair Keachie. Working with the Franklin Keachie chart, it would appear that Margaret Adair Keachie was the first wife of James Milroy. The chart names son William and dates his birth year to 1825 in Galt. The chart then names daughters Margaret, Mary Ann, Jane, and Agnes Matilda, and these four daughters appear with James and Margaret Milroy in the 1851 census. This census was actually enumerated in January of 1852 and the age question was: What is your age as of your next birthday? Since their next birthdays were likely later in 1852, their years of birth are calculated from this.

First Church marriages indicate that James Milroy married Margaret Milroy in 1839 and the record makes it clear that both surnames were Milroy. In all probability, James and his second wife were cousins, though we have no information at present as to their parentage.

It becomes evident that James and his second wife Margaret with their children left Canada prior to the 1861 census. Son Peter Milroy's enumeration at Hazel Green, Delaware County, Iowa, tells that he, Peter, came to the U.S. in 1856. Considering that he was age 12 or 13 at the time, we must believe that the entire family migrated at the same time Certainly, by the 1860 census, the family was in Union Township, Delaware County.

Son William Milroy, by James' first marriage to Margaret Adair Keachie, is in Delaware County at the time of the 1860 census. In later years he is in Kansas. Where asked, William states in his census information that his mother was born in New York and the background that we have for Margaret, the first wife of James, tells us that this is correct. Contrast this with Iowa census information that places the birth of James' second wife, Margaret, in Scotland.
