Note | The 1900 census in Blaine Township, Clay County, Kansas, tells that William came to the U.S. in 1838. This same year is supplied for his wife. It's possible that Joanna was in the U.S. that early, but not reasonable for William, for he would have been age 13 in 1838. He has not been found in the Canada 1851 census nor in the U.S. 1850 census. He is in Iowa by the time of the 1860 census and, considering that his father came there in the mid 1850s, William was probably there from not long after 1850. His wife Joanna was born in Scotland, but her maiden name has not been found. They are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Clay County, Kansas. Find-a-Grave provides a clear photo of their gravestone. William is said to have died in 1906 and Joanna, shown as Joan, died in 1926. The 1900 census does show William's mother's place of birth as being New York (state) and this is correct. |
