Catharine Harvie

ID # 4183, (1834-1904)
FatherAlexander Harvie (1792-1882)
MotherCatharine Campbell (1802-1888)
BirthCatharine Harvie was born on 3 February 1834 at Branchton, Upper Canada.
ChristeningShe was christened on 25 February 1834 at First Church, Galt.
MarriageShe married William Buchanan, son of Alexander Buchanan and Elizabeth Leece, on 8 December 1853 at Beverly Township, Wentworth Co., Canada West.
The following marriage record is transcribed from microfilm LCM-30, found at the United Church of Canada archives:

By licence in Beverly Dec. 8, 1853
William Buchanan, Blenheim Tp
Catherine Harvey, Beverly Tp
Witnesses Alex Buchanan jr.,
John Harvie

The date of the marriage as it appears on the page is ambiguous for it's difficult to say whether it referred to the marriage of William and Catherine or to the previous record. The family bible, however, confirms the marriage date of December 8, 1853.

The marriage was performed by Rev. Strang.

Since the marriage was performed in Beverly, it's very likely that it was held at the home of the bride's parents who were resident in Beverly at the time. Rev. Strang was the minister at First Church (Presbyterian) in Galt.

DeathShe died on 19 January 1904 at Galt, Ontario, at age 69.
BurialShe was buried at Section 2, Mountview Cemetery, Cambridge/Galt.
NoteCatharine Harvie will have been born near Branchton, though quite possibly over the Dumfries Township line in Beverly Township where her parents certainly were in later years. For the moment, the best that may be said is that The Alex Harvie Jr's were not in Beverly Township as of the 1832 assessment, and were not in Dumfries Township as of the 1834 assessment. They were in Beverly as of the 1839 assessment.

First Church baptisms do cover February of 1834, but do not show the names of the parents. It's reasonable to interpret Catharine's baptism, which is recorded in First Church's records as follows:

1834
Feb 25, Katharine Harvey, J

The baptisms were numbered in the baptism record book and 'Katharine's' is number 28.

February 25, 1834, is a Tuesday. This seems a bit odd until examination of other baptisms frequently appear to have been performed on weekdays. The J looks almost like a 2, but examination of other records quickly resolve the character to be a J for junior. Catharine's mother was named Catharine and the 'junior' aspect appears to be the intended usage. As for the name Harvie being misspelled, it was no doubt not the first time and many examples of such happened thereafter.

At first glance, the baptism records are written more neatly than the marriage records, to the point of wondering if indeed the marriage records are the handwriting of James Strang then were the baptism records written by the same person. A close examination indicates that both were written by the same person.
