Note | Familysearch has a database, Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, microfilm 1,041,399 Alexander Harvie Christening date 05 Aug 1792 at Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland Birthdate 31 Jul 1792 Parents Alexander Harvie and Mary Cameron Alexander Harvie (Jr.) married twice. His first wife was Janet, or Jennet, McArthur. Janet died in childbirth, along with the child, and they were buried in the Harvie Cemetery, which is now at Sheffield Cemetery. In the Dumfries Reformer Weekly Advertiser issue of November 20, 1882, there is an obituary for Alexander Harvie. It says that he died at the home of his son-in-law, William Milroy. He was born in Ayrshire and at 18 emigrated with his father's family to Caledonia, N.Y. After a residence there of about 7 years the family moved to Canada. The obit goes on to say that he lived for a time on a farm later occupied by John Buchanan (likely Jr.) and then moved to Beverly township. His first wife was a sister of Donald McArthur, not named in the obituary, but now known to be Janet McArthur. They had two children, John Harvie of Blenheim and another, believed stillborn when Janet died in childbirth. His second wife was Catherine Campbell. By Catherine he had one son, Malcom - said to be residing in the U.S. - and four daughters - Mrs. Augustus Buchanan of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Wm Buchanan of Glen Morris, Mrs. James B. Keachie, and Mrs. Wm. Milroy of North Dumfries. Mention is made in the obituary of his family coming to the area in 1817, and that his father, brother and sisters were deceased before him. No mention is made of his mother in Canada. We have no sure mention of his mother travelling with the family from Scotland to the United States and it is possible that she died in Scotland. On one point, the obituary is wrong. Alex had not one son by Catherine Campbell, but two. Not mentioned is son Alex, who is shown in this tree. Young Alex's Waterloo County marriage registration makes it clear that he is a son of Alex and Catherine. Malcolm, his brother is a witness, so there is no room here for confusion with Malcolm. As well as his obituary, we also have his date of death as it appears on his gravestone in Mountview Cemetery at Galt. No registration of his death has been found. Alexander Harvey appears in an 1839 Beverly assessment and census on concession 8, lot 6. Alex and Catherine were in Beverly Township at the time of the 1861 and 1871 censuses. At the time of the 1881 census, Alex and Catharine are in Galt. |
