Elizabeth Cope
ID # 3639, (1808-1884)
Birth | Elizabeth Cope was born on 5 May 1808 at Canada. |
Marriage | She married William Hayes Coleman, son of John W. Coleman and Margaret Hayes, on 30 May 1836. William and Elizabeth were probably married in Beverly Township, though we have no certainty. Their daughter Margaret, born in 1838, is said on her marriage registration to have been born in Beverly. Elizabeth's family was in Beverly, as was William's at the time. There are no marriage registrations to be found for the Gore District prior to 1842. It is believed that an older book once existed, but was lost. Some travelling ministers kept private journals and a record may yet show up, but it seems unlikely. A Culp Family history says that William H. Coleman and Elizabeth Cope were married on 30 May 1836, which is entirely plausible. The same history, however, places William's birth in Beverly and his death record places his birth in New Jersey. That his birth place was New Jersey is much more likely. |
Death | She died on 19 February 1884 at Caradoc Township, Middlesex County, at age 75. |
Burial | She was buried at Cook's United Church Cemetery, Caradoc Twp.. |
Note | The death registration of Elizabeth Cope Coleman is given as 010569-84, Caradoc Twp., Middlesex County. She was said to be 75 years, 9 months and 14 days of age. Her birth date is calculated from this. The parents of Elizabeth Cope Coleman were Thomas Cope, b. about 1763 in New York and Frances Culp, b. about 1769 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They resided in Beverly Township, but moved to Caradoc Township in Middlesex County in January of 1844 and lived on C4-L18 for a number of years before selling off portions of the lot and finally being clear of it by 1853. William Hayes Coleman purchased land in Caradoc in 1853. See C-1049, 1861 census, 5th Ward, Caradoc, page 29. There, it is apparent that Thomas and Frances Cope are living with William and Elizabeth. Considering the sparcity of records for William H. Coleman after the sale of his property in Beverly in 1838, it may be that he and Elizabeth were living with Thomas and Frances. |
