William Hayes Coleman

ID # 3638, (1810-1897)
FatherJohn W. Coleman (1786-1862)
MotherMargaret Hayes (1790-1882)
BirthWilliam Hayes Coleman was born on 4 February 1810 at New Jersey.
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Cope on 30 May 1836.
William and Elizabeth were probably married in Beverly Township, though we have no certainty. Their daughter Margaret, born in 1838, is said on her marriage registration to have been born in Beverly. Elizabeth's family was in Beverly, as was William's at the time. There are no marriage registrations to be found for the Gore District prior to 1842. It is believed that an older book once existed, but was lost. Some travelling ministers kept private journals and a record may yet show up, but it seems unlikely.

A Culp Family history says that William H. Coleman and Elizabeth Cope were married on 30 May 1836, which is entirely plausible. The same history, however, places William's birth in Beverly and his death record places his birth in New Jersey. That his birth place was New Jersey is much more likely.

DeathHe died on 9 July 1897 at Caradoc Township, Middlesex County, at age 87.
BurialHe was buried at Cook's United Church Cemetery, Caradoc Twp..
NoteOne source places William's birth in Pennsylvania. William's death registration places his birth in New Jersey and this is believed to be correct. Documentary evidence in the form of a contentious land claim in Beverly Township names him as William H. Coleman. Further evidence is that he married Elizabeth Cope and went, likely with her parents, to Caradoc Township in Middlesex County. His will provides the fact that his middle name was Hays. Hayes seems the more accurate, so it is used here. Various Canadian census years, plus William's death registration, give his birth place as New Jersey, so this is used here.

The death registration for William H. Coleman is 015712-97 (see below). He was said to reside at Concession 1, lot 11 of Caradoc. Darius death registration in 1911 places him at concession 2, lot 11.

The will for William H. Coleman has been found on Microfilm GS2, reel 104. This is in volume O for the Middlesex Surrogate Court, pages 492-494. In his will, he gives his name as William Hays Coleman.

It is clear from the Second Heirs document mentioned above for the Beverly half lot ownership resolution that William was a son of John W. Coleman and Margaret Hayes. Add to that, William and Elizabeth named a daughter Serepta, a most uncommon name, reasonably we may say after William's sister.

Note that the last three children named for William and Elizabeth, William, John and Serepta, died within a week of each other in August and September of 1850. This was before civil death registrations. We do not know the reason for the deaths of these children, but diptheria might be a good guess.

Note that CanGenWeb has a photo of the stone for these three children, which is in Cook's United Church Cemetery in Caradoc Township. It is badly worn and nearly unreadable, but a transcription of the cemetery is to hand which is provided by the London and Middlesex Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and the death dates for these children are taken from this.
