Margaret E. Thomas died Dec. 13, 1925. Born Ontario 1837. Age 88 yrs., 3 months. Widowed. Length of residence at place of death 14 months, in province life. Parents Wm. Coleman, born United States, Elizabeth Cope, born England. Physician A. W. Zumstein, Delhi. Informant Mrs. Watters, Delhi, daughter. Burial Cook's Cemetery, Caradoc, Dec. 16, 1925.

The registration isn't easily readable on all points. The death was filed through the registrar of the Township of Middleton. Delhi as shown for Mrs. 'Watters' will likely refer to her postal address, so, probably, Mary Waters and her mother Margaret were living in the township. Just who they in turn were living with remains unknown. The registration was not received by the township registration until January (5th or 6th - slightely illegible), 1926. Hence the registration as it appears under the indexing of the Archives of Ontario is listed in 1926. Margaret's mother, Elizabeth Cope, was born in Ontario. This is shown in census information during her lifetime. The Cope family does go back in Upper Canada history and Copetown is named after them.

CanGenWeb has an attractive photo of the gravestone for Margaret and William. Buried with them are daughter Lavinia, who died in 1878, and son William, who died in 1876. Both were young children.

It may be that Margaret Euphrasia went by Margaret in later years, though earlier records do show her as Euphrasia.

A final comment, and this is a total opinion and may be treated as such:

William and Margaret named their first child Mary Serepta Thomas. Margaret, born in 1837, will probably have known her aunt, Serepta Coleman, who went to Boone County, Illinois, with her parents, and who married Thomas Postlethwaite. It seems more likely, however, that she named her first born, Mary Serepta Thomas, after her infant sister Serepta, who was born in 1849 and who died in 1850.

Stories come down from earlier generations with large families that tell how later born children were assigned into the care of older sisters. Margaret was about 12 when Serepta was born and she may have been the main caregiver for the infant and it would have been grievous for her when Serepta died.

As said, that's an opinion, not to mention a bit of a social commentary, but it is based on stories for whom such happenings were a living experience at the time. And in such process and as an aside, how much schooling Margaret Euphrasia would have received is unknown to us.
