Elizabeth Matthews
ID # 3615, (1817-1887)
Father | Thomas Matthews (1782-1855) |
Mother | Nancy Coleman (1790-1870) |
Birth | Elizabeth Matthews was born on 3 September 1817 at Genessee County, New York. |
Marriage | She married Michael Muma, son of Jacob Muma and Susan Starnaman, on 20 January 1841 at Talbot District. The marriage of Michael Muma and Elizabeth Matthews appears in the Talbot District Marriage Register: MS248 Reel 4, Vol. 22, pages 21 & 22 Talbot District A Certified return of all Marriages performed by me William Rees a minister of the Regular Baptist Church, Simcoe Michael Muma and Elizabeth Mathuse, both of Dumfries, were married Jany 20, 1841, by banns. Witnesses Isaac Fongar and Wm Mathuse. The marriage date for Elizabeth and Michael is also to be found in the biography of Michael as it appears in the Warner & Beers History of the County of Brant, page 673. The 1883 Warner & Beers History does not tell us the location of the marriage. We may note, however, that William Rees, as shown above, was the Regular Baptist Minister at the town of Simcoe (in present day Norfolk Couty and not to be confused with present day Simcoe County.) The Talbot District was hived off from the London District in 1837. Simcoe was the district town for the new Talbot District. As of the time of the marriage of Michael and Elizabeth, 1841, Dumfries Township was in the Gore District. It is possible that Rev. Rees married the couple in Dumfries Township and recorded the marriage at the town of Simcoe in the Talbot District, which was where he lived. It's also possible that Michael and Elizabeth traveled to Simcoe Town to get married. The former explanation is the more likely, especially as it was after the publishing of banns, but the marriage is recorded in the Talbot District and so is shown as the location here. |
Death | She died on 4 October 1887 at South Dumfries Township, Brant County, at age 70. |
Burial | She was buried at Baptist Church Cemetery, South Dumfries Twp.. |
Note | Elizabeth and Michael's birth years are approximated from the 1851 census taken at South Dumfries Township. Elizabeth's death registration number is 001434-87. Elizabeth and Michael appear to have resided on lot six of the first concession of South Dumfries Township in Brant County, according to the Abstract Index. The property had in earlier years been owned by Samuel Street and William Dickson. Michael Muma purchased 50 acres of this lot in 1845 from Thomas Clark Street, the son of Samuel. He purchased another 50 acres in 1851 from John Patten and his wife. At the same time he took out a mortage from Thomas Clark Street and was able to discharge it in 1854. He was able to purchase another 20 acres of this lot in 1859. Information for the children's names and ages comes from the Warner and Beers History, plus the 1851 and 1861 Canadian censuses. Elizabeth Matthews had her own will. It is to be found on microfilm GS2 reel 3. The grant number is 1138 and it appears on page 393 of the register. Elizabeth essentially leaves her property, mainly in the form of a bank deposit, to her three daughters, Susan, Mary and Louisa. She names as executors her son Alfred and her brother (so identified) in Iowa William W. Matthews. As William was in fact in Iowa, it does appear that the executorship essentially fell to Alfred. |
