Alfred Muma (spelling mangled), 28, bachelor, farmer. Baptist. Born and residing St. George, Dumfries. Parents Michael and Elizabeth Muma.
Victoria Coleman, 32, spinster, born Beverly, residing Freelton. Episcopal Methodist. Parents James and Jane Coleman.
Witnesses Bella Davidson of Freelton and James Coleman of Stockton, California.
On 20th December, 1882, at Freelton, by J. L. Robertson, minister.

The date the clergyman filed the marriage registration is not given. It may well have been prior to the year end of 1882. The township clerk, however, did not turn in the page with the registration until 30 June, 1883, so we may say that the registration year was 1883.

Just who was the witness, James Coleman of Stockton, California, isn't immediately apparent. Artaxerxes was in the Stockton area as was, before and after this marriage, Hannibal. Hannibal was married in Freelton to Anna Davidson, probably the sister of witness Bella (above) in April of 1883, and Artaxerxes certainly didn't have children of an age to attend back in Canada as a witness to a marriage. This is a guess, but, either the clergyman made a mistake, or, just possibly, Hannibal gave his name as James. There's evidence that Hannibal Balshazzer Coleman did not like his second name, betimes giving it as Bertram. He may not have been wild about his first name, either, though he used it regularly back in California. It's difficult to come up with another candidate for witness that came from Stockton. James, above, so called, must have been Hannibal.

Certainly, when Hannibal married Anna Davidson at Freelton in April of the next year, Alf Muma was a witness.

MarriageHe married Emily Alleda Burkholder, daughter of Joel Burkholder and Hannah Catharine Taylor, in August 1917 at Toronto, York County, Ontario.
Due to fading, information on the marriage registration of Alfred and Emily is difficult to read. There is enough, however, to compare with Emily's death registration of 1943 and to identify her reasonably well.

NoteAlfred and Victoria Muma must have gone to Iowa shortly after their marriage, which as noted was on 20 December, 1882, at Freelton in Flamborough West Township, Ontario, for they appear in the 1885 Iowa state census at Buena Vista, Nokomis Township, Iowa, and are shown on the North East 1/2 of section 28. With them is Alf's brother Frank. All three are shown as being born in Canada. Alf and Victoria are both shown as age 30; brother Frank is shown as 24. Also with the family is Alf and Victoria's son Frank C. Muma, age 1. He is shown as being born in Buena Vista. Daughter Grace is believed to be born in 1885, but was evidently born later in the year.

By the time of the 1891 census, Alfred and Victoria are back in South Dumfries with their children. Frank and Grace are shown as born in the U.S. Grace is shown as age 5 which would imply a birth years of 1885 or '86. Ellen Gertrude is age 4 and born in Canada, so their approximate return to Canada would be about 1886. Susan, their last born child so far as we know, is age 1.

At the time of the 1901 census Alfred and Victoria are shown in Ancaster. They have with them all of their children as shown in the 1891 census. Their two eldest, Frank and Grace are shown as coming to Canada in 1886.

Alfred appears in the 1911 census at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. It isn't clear if he has a connection with anyone else enumerated on the page. There are no apparent family members with him and there is no evidence of a wife.

At the time of the 1921 census, Alfred is in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Again, there is no evidence of a wife. Also present in Kindersely, however, in 1921, is Alf's son Frank. He is there with his wife Isabella and their children. Frank is on page 11 of the Kindersley census and Alf is on page 14.

Alfred's brother Nelson and wife Mary Ann are atQu'Appelle, Saskatchewan in the 1916 Western census. Alfred has not been found there in this census.

Library and Archives Canada does provide us with a Land Grant record of sorts for Alfred. They refer to a microfilm, C-6381. This indicates that he had a grant on Part SE, Section 12, Township 24, Range 16, Meridian W3, Folio 190, Liber 559. It is undated. There is an image of a general map. A specialist in Western Land Grants could no doubt offer a salutary interpretation.

Before his death, however, he must have remarried for the informant in his death registration is shown as Mrs. Muma, wife.
