Note | The Warner and Beers Brant County History biography for Michael Muma says that Thomas and Nancy Matthews came to Dumfries Township in February of 1831. Thomas appears in the Gore District census of 1842 for Dumfries Township. He is said to be a laborer and has 8 persons in his household. He does not appear to own land in the township, but, apparently, works for the Muma family.
Thomas Matthews and family do not appear in the 1832 East Dumfries census of 1832. This census appears on microfilm MS700 reel 1 and is a census and assessment for the portion of the township lying to the east of the Grand River. If the family was established by 1832, the fact that they were not land owners shouldn't have precluded their inclusion in the census. Others appear that are obviously not land owners.
A photo of Nancy's gravestone appears on Find-a-Grave and places her burial in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville Delaware County, Iowa. |
