Just who the witnesses were isn't clear. John and Harriet Gamble lived in Beverly, near Troy. They had in their household in 1871 children shown as Gambles, but whose birth names were Badger. In any event, none of them had the initial L. Probably, L. Gamble was John Gamble and the town clerk at Brantford had difficulty with the clergyman's handwriting.

Jessie's mother, Jessie Spence, as stated above, died 29 April, 1860. The year is slightly garbled in the Hamilton Branch OGS transcription, but Harley Misener's transcription is clear enough and Jessie will have been only a few days old when she lost her mother. By the time of the 1871 census she is in the houseold of Thomson Laidlaw, probably her father's brother.
