At some point, Delilah attended the Ontario Ladies College, as it was then known, in Whitby, and there tragedy occurred.

The following appeared in the Toronto Daily Star, Monday, February 12, 1906, page 5.

Died of the Burns
Miss Able, a student at Whitby Ladies College, victim of explosion of lamp.
Grief has followed gaiety at the Ontario Ladies College at Whitby. The annual conversazione took place on Friday night, and today one student is dead, and a second is bereft of her father.
While Miss Delilah Able and several other girls were curling their hair last Friday afternoon, in preparation for the social gathering, the alcohol lamp exploded, and Miss Able was so seriously burned that she died yesterday.
The remains passed through Toronto this morning on their way to Lynden, the home of the deceased, and where the internment will be held. A passenger on the same train was Miss McCrae of Glencoe, whose father had just died.
