Note | A transcription of the 1881 census taken in Toronto, St. George Ward, shows Jasper Vrooman, age 22, as a laborer. The head of the household is Mark H. Irish. The number of persons living there, apparently all men, suggests that this was a boarding house. An image of this census page is available, but it is badly faded. We shall have to trust the transcription. At the time of Jasper's marriage to Nellie Gillings in 1885, he is in London East, Ontario, and shown as a merchant. In December of 1887 at the time daughter Laura was born, the family is in Smiths Falls, Lanark County, Ontario, and Jasper is shown as chief constable. He has not been found in Ontario in the 1891 census. He does appear in the 1901 census, however, in Metcalfe Township, Middlesex County. He is living with his sister Eliza and her husband Ogle K. Gough (the first name, Ogle, is barely legible on the census page). His sister Annie Vrooman is also present in the household. Jasper is described as a pedlar. To date, this is the last record found for Jasper. |
