     James Dowling was born on 8 February 1829 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of William Dowling & Elizabeth McElhaney.1 He married Rhoda Ann Graves, daughter of Roswell Graves and Mary Ann Betts, on 21 September 1852 in Pennsylvania.1 He was left a widower when Rhoda Ann Graves died on 25 April 1905.2 He died on 1 September 1910 in Crawford County, Wisconsin, at age 81.1 He was buried in Haney Ridge Cemetery, Barnum, Crawford County, WisconsinG.1
