Wellington County Marriage Register 1858-1868

Extracted from a list of marriage solemnized by Rev. John Hogg, a minister of the Established Church of Scotland, for the year ending the 31st day of December, 1867.

Alexander Easton, 26, born Dumfries, C.W., residing Puslinch. Father Alexander Easton, mother Agnes Oliver.
Agnes C. Dickson, 25, born Illeg. Scotland, residing Eramosa. Father James Dickson, mother Hannah Murdock.
Witness Robert Dickson, Eramosa.

Some records show Alexander Easton as being born in Scotland. His marriage registration appears to show with reasonable clarity that he was born in Dumfries, C.W. (Dumfries Township in what was at the time Canada West, now Ontario.) It's not unreasonable to believe that this information was provided to the clergyman by Alex.

The old Dumfries Township, which was in the Gore District, was divided in two when the county system came in. North Dumfries Township is in Waterloo County and South Dumfries Township is in Brant County.

As you will note in the above, Agnes' date of birth is stated - September 15, 1835. Her age in years, months, and days is also given. This does in fact agree with her age if calculated from her date of death. This does not always happen.

As of the 1930s, did doctors or funeral directors have some handy device that made such a calculation easy? Your researcher would be interested to hear.

When only the age is provided in years, months and days, which does happen, this computer program - Legacy - has its own (obviously computerized) method for arriving at a date of birth - and it's quite easy. As to whether the original information is entirely accurate is another matter.
