Alexander Easton
ID # 9990, (1840-1917)
Father | Alexander Easton (1811-1863) |
Mother | Agnes Oliver (1813-1888) |
Birth | Alexander Easton was born on 10 January 1840 at Dumfries Township, Gore District, Canada West. |
Marriage | He married Agnes Cochrane Dickson, daughter of James H. Dickson and Hannah Murdoch, on 12 April 1867 at Wellington County, Canada West. MS248 reel 17, Vol. 79, page 194 Wellington County Marriage Register 1858-1868 Extracted from a list of marriage solemnized by Rev. John Hogg, a minister of the Established Church of Scotland, for the year ending the 31st day of December, 1867. Alexander Easton, 26, born Dumfries, C.W., residing Puslinch. Father Alexander Easton, mother Agnes Oliver. Agnes C. Dickson, 25, born Illeg. Scotland, residing Eramosa. Father James Dickson, mother Hannah Murdock. Witness Robert Dickson, Eramosa. 12th April, 1867 Some records show Alexander Easton as being born in Scotland. His marriage registration appears to show with reasonable clarity that he was born in Dumfries, C.W. (Dumfries Township in what was at the time Canada West, now Ontario.) It's not unreasonable to believe that this information was provided to the clergyman by Alex. The old Dumfries Township, which was in the Gore District, was divided in two when the county system came in. North Dumfries Township is in Waterloo County and South Dumfries Township is in Brant County. |
Death | He died on 23 February 1917 at Chatham, Kent Co., at age 77. |
Burial | He was buried at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, Ontario. |
Note | Death reg. 016513-17 Chatham, Kent Co. Alexander Easton, age 75, died at Chatham on Feby. 23, 1917. Born Beverly Township. Retired farmer. Married. Parents Alexander Easton and Agnes Oliver. Physician R. V. Bray. Informant Wm. Easton, Chatham. The 1901 census at Harwich Township, Kent County, shows Alexander's date of birth as Jan. 10, 1840, and his place of birth as Ontario. Alex's place of birth is shown above in his death registration as being in Beverly, and it is believed that the family spent some time in Beverly. Some census records, mostly, place his birth in Ontario. His marriage registration places his birth in Dumfries, C.W., and this is entirely possible - if only for starters - Alexander himself for his marriage registration must surely have given the information. With regard to baptisms, viewing available published records, no baptisms for Alexander Easton Jr. and his Canadian born siblings have been found. Young Alexander may well have been born in Dumfries Township, probably under the roof of family connections, but, at a guess, they were all probably baptized at Knox Church at Creiff in Puslinch Township. No published record for baptisms at this church have been found. The Presbyterian Archives do list microfilm for Crieff baptisms, but they are only recorded from1855. Note that when the old District governance system was done away with in approximately 1850, the county system came into being. Dumfries was divided in half along the 6th concession. North Dumfries became a township in Waterloo County and South Dumfries became a township in Brant County. The village of Ayr is in North Dumfries Township, but it is located close to the border with South Dumfries. Ayr Cemetery has numbers of Olivers buried therein. This includes George Oliver who died on July 30, 1859,at age 76 years, 9 months, and 14 days, and his wife Mary Rutherford, who died April 25, 1888, age 95 years, 4 months, and 20 days. Their stone goes on to say that they were natives of Roxburghshire, Scotland. (The Ayr Cemetery transcription is publication number 4489 of the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.) Also, Norma Huber, in her Funeral Cards of Waterloo County, shows one for Mary Rutherford, relict of George Oliver. This dates her funeral to April 27th, 1888, and which would take place at the residence of Mrs. Hope, Stanley Street, Ayr. Were they Alexander's maternal grandparents? This is unproven, but probably a working hypothesis for someone to tackle. The 1891 census at Harwich Township in Kent County shows Alex Easton and Agnes Dickson with William, Elizabeth, and Mary Jane. Their dates of birth are given, but bear little resemblance to their birth dates as shown on their birth registrations. |
