Death | He died in 1863. |
Burial | He was buried at Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Creiff, Puslinch Twp., Wellington Co.. |
Note | Alexander Easton is buried in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery at Creiff in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, with his wife, Agnes Oliver. The Guelph branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed this cemetery in 1994. At the time, Alexander's inscription wasn't entirely readable. What is available says: Alexander Easton died 2 .....1863, age 52 yrs., 11 mos., 15 days. Native of Roxburghshire, Scotland. Of course, the problem being that we do not have the month of his death. We also do not have a place of death for Alexander. It was probably Beverly Township, but we cannot be certain. A number of their children are buried with them. At the time of the deaths of the parents and children, their residences were mostly, not entirely, at lot 20, concession 10, in Beverly Township. This is close to the border of Puslinch Township in Wellington County. It is also not too far from Morriston and even closer to the village of Puslinch (Puslinch the village being referred to here as opposed to Puslinch the township.) When Adam Easton died in 1918, his death was reported by his brother William, whose address was rural route Puslinch. When Jane Easton died in 1926, her death was reported by her sister Ellen of RR #2, Morriston. Both Puslinch village and Morriston are located in Puslinch Township. It's entirely probable that mail handled for the family's farm in Beverly changed back and forth between Morriston and Puslinch. The village of Crieff is not far from Morriston. The attending physician for both Jane and Adam is shown to be of Morriston. The family was Presbyterian and, at a guess, Knox Church at Creiff was their church of choice. Hence the burial of most of the family at the Knox Church, Crieff, cemetery. As a further note here, tax records for Beverly back to 1842 have been found. An Alexander Easton appears therein as of 1842 and shows him to be at lot 20 on the 10th concession. The 1851 Agricultural census for Beverly Township shows Alex to be at lot 20 in the 10th concession (see page 19.) He is said to have 100 acres. The 1861 Agricultural census shows him at the same lot and concession (see page 6). This tells us that he had 97-1/2 acres. Back to the tax assessents for a moment: 1842 Tax assessments show Alexander Easton on C10-L20 as of 1842. This probably had to do with his operating a farm there, but not necessarily of ownership. Ontario Land Records (Onland) history documents show a Bargain & Sale transaction (B&S) wherein the Canada Company is selling the land to Alex on 12 Dec 1854. It wasn't registered until 26 Dec 1855. This would mean that prior to December of 1854, Alex was leasing the land. The available tax assessments only begin in 1842. It seems likely that Alex was on the property a little earlier than this.
