Note | Andrew Taylor in his Our Todays and Yesterdays, 1970, (see page 295) provides something of a background history for Andrew and Janet as well as their children. This in turn Mr. Taylor had from Mrs. Connolly of Toronto, who was a great grand daughter of Andrew Dryden. We gain at least some insight into the integrity of this information from the transcription of Section 3 of Mountview Cemetery as done by the Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society as done in 1988. Mountview Cemetery is not where the Drydens were originally buried. Mountview Cemetery was not named as such until 1886. Prior to that it was named the Galt Cemetery, and this did not come into existence until July of 1868. Prior to that, burials in Galt were done in parochial cemeteries, Presbyterian or Anglican. Were Andrew and Janet buried in the Anglican Cemetery, their remains would still be there. Some remains were moved from St. Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery, but it is said that most of the burials there remain untouched, though very few stones survive. The cemetery of First Church was at what was later named High Park, overlooking downtown Galt. This ceased to exist in the mid 1880s and most remains were taken by families and buried in Mountview. There are stories of some remains not being removed, but that does not appear to apply to the Drydens. Andrew and Janet are buried with son James and his wife, Mary Swan. The record appears on Section 3's page 69. Per the transcription, it reads: Andrew Dryden died 1848 aged 72 years. Janet Cairns his wife died 1864 aged 80 years. Unquote It's tempting to make the guess that the Drydens attended First Church and possibly, just, were originally buried in Strang's Burial Grounds. The problem with this is that a goodly number of scanned pages of First Church are to hand and they do not appear recorded therein. |
