Walter K. Dryden died Feb. 16, 1913, at Lot 22., Con. 8, North Dumfries. Saw Miller, married. Age 86 Date of birth March 27, 1827. Born Scotland. Parents Andrew Dryden and Janet Cairns, both born Scotland. Physician Dr. A. Hawk, Galt. Informant G. J. Little (undertaker), Galt.

We take Walter's date of birth from the above death registration. It is at some variance with 1901 census which dates his birth to March 10, 1827. It may be mentioned here that both the 1901 and 1911 censuses have Walter coming to Canada in 1834. This is probably a fairly reliable date for stating that the whole Dryden family, Walter's parents and siblings, will have come to Canada that year.

With the above death registration, as filed with the North Dumfries Township registrar, we also have the following information which is taken from Norma Huber's 2001 work: Funeral Notice Cards of Waterloo County, 1851 to 1980, as published by the Waterloo Regional branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Walter is said to have died on Sunday, February 16th, 1913, at 7:30 in the morning in his 86th year. The funeral took place from his residence, lot 22 on the 8th concession, North Dumfries, on Tuesday afternoon, the 18th.

Walter K. Dryden has not been found in the 1851 Canada West census. He has been found there in 1861. By this time, Walter and Charlotte are married. The census page states that they were married in 1857. He is described as a lumber merchant and an atheist. His place of birth is shown as Scotland and this should be correct. Here as well, Charlotte's place of birth is shown as Scotland, but this is probably not correct. Other census years show her place of birth as Ireland.

The Walter K. Dryden family and the 1871 census.

The main thing about Walter and his family so far as the 1871 census is concerned is that they aren't in it. Walter ran a sawmill. Andrew Taylor in his Our Todays and Yesterdays shows a photo of the sawmill taken perhaps around 1900. He locates the mill on lot 22 of the 8th concession of North Dumfries, but states that the business began on lot 21 on the 9th concession. He describes the family as of the 1861 census. The family may be found in the 1881 census in North Dumfries and Walter is still there as of the 1891 census. The family is quite simply not to be found anywhere in Canada so far as the 1871 census is concerned.

This isn't reasonable. Daughter Eliza Jane was born in North Dumfries in 1870 and she died there in 1872 and these events are recorded in appropriate registrations. Adjacent family names have been viewed in both the 1861 and 1881 censuses and these names can be found in the 1871 census. Surrounding pages were checked for these families in the expectation that the Walter Drydens might be found. There was, however, no sign of them. Page numbers have been checked to see if there were pages missing, but this does not appear to be the case. How their enumeration got missed is a mystery.

Walter and Charlotte with a number of children appear in the 1881 census in North Dumfries. Walter as well as his oldest son Andrew are shown as sawyers. The family is also shown as Presbyterian.
