Note | Death reg. 015613-23 Owen Sound, Grey Co. Catherine Lawrence died April 13, 1923. Age 75 yrs. Widowed. Residence 1424 3rd Ave. East. Born England June 24. Year not given. Place of death her residence. Parents Edward Jenkins and Catherine Williams, both born England (?). Physician W. G. Dow, Owen Sound. It's probable that the registrar at Owen Sound had trouble with the informant's signature. It is copied as Mrs. R. Hunty, 1424 3rd Ave. East. It's reasonable to take it as actually being Catherine's daughter Edith, or Mrs. R. Trusty. She was married to Robert Trusty and we have sufficient information to place Edith and Robert at 1424 3rd Ave East in Owen Sound as of the births of two of their sons in 1912 and 1915. According to the Vernon's City Directories for Owen Sound, the Trustys resided at this address for many years after the passing of Catherine. The death registration gives the date of Catherine's death as April 13, 1923, but the date of burial is marked 'don't know'. The Bruce-Grey branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides cemetery transcriptions and this includes Owen Sound. This also has a list of burials at Greenwood Cemetery and this tells of both dates of death and burial. They show Catherine's burial as being on the 17th of April at Greenwood. Catherine's parents, Edward Jenkins and Catherine Williams, were married on 24 December, 1837, at the Parish Church, Swansea in the County of Glamorgan. It's possible to get back to the 1841 census to record something of Catherine's family for Edward and Catherine Jenkins, Catherine's parents reside in Swansea, Wales. Edward is shown as a shipwright and as being age 33 and Catherine's age as 32. Also present is a daughter Mary, age 19 months, as well as Mary Jenkins, age 73 - probably Edward's mother. The 1851 census enumerated at St. Paul Deptford in Kent. This shows both Edward and Catherine as 36 (?) Edward is shown as a shipwright and employed at H.M. Dockyard. Edward is said to have been born in Portsea, Hants., and wife Catherine is said to have been born in Swansea. Mary, age 11, and Catherine (who married George Lawrence), age 9, are both said to have been born in Swansea. A younger sister to the girls, Sarah A., age 5, is said to have been born in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire. The 1861 census in St. Paul Deptford shows Edward, age 50, as a shipwright at H.M. Dockyard. His place of birth is shown as Portsmouth, Hants. His wife, Catherine, is also shown as age 50, and as being born in Swansea, Glamorgan. Also with them are daughters Mary, age 21. and Catherine, age 20, shirtmakers, and both born in Swansea. Marriage records show that Catharine Jenkins and George Lawrence were married on 1 July. 1868, at St. Paul Deptford. And as told in the notes for George, George and Catherine were in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the 1871 census. The 1871 census shows Edward Jenkins in St.Johns, Southwark, London, England. He is said to be 63, a shipwright and widower, and as being born in Portsmouth, Hants. With him is daughter Mary Jenkins, age 30, a widow, and born in Swansea, Wales. Also present is a male child, Harry Jenkins, age 5, and he is said to be Edward's grandson. His place of birth was Deptford, Kent. We must say that it is Mary and Harry who shortly thereafter appear with George and Catherine Lawrence aboard the SS St. David en route to Canada. There, Harry's name is oddly spelled and he is said to be a female child. This appears to be in error for Harry's marriage has been found in Toronto where he married a Rosebell Hellmore in 1885. On his marriage registration he states his parents to be Henry and Mary Jenkins. |
